Nissan were one of the initial teams that were involved in the BTCC for the inception of the new single 'super tourer' class for the start of the 1991 championship. For the first part of the season only a single car was run by the Janspeed team, driven by Kieth O'dor, but later in the year he was joined by Julian Bailey in a second car.  The Janspeed prepared car was in fact the world's first ever racing Primera, but despite it's immaculate presentation on race days it did suffer from mechanical teething problems.  However the Primera did indicate promise and Odor gained a commendable sixth place in the penultimate round at Thruxton.  It was a consolidation year for all concerned at Janspeed with the team finishing in fifth place in the manufacturers table by the end of the season.

1992 saw Nissan enter with much the same format as the previous season, although Bailey had left for Toyota being replaced by Andy Middlehurst, who had driven a Ford Sierra in '91.  Odor's car was newly-built and featured a much lower ride height than the car run for Middlehurst until mid-season which was still to the '91 specification.  The team built on experience but despite some good qualifying times they struggled to finish above the middle order in most rounds of the championship.  Although the engines were a substantial improvement on the '91 units, a simple lack of ultimate horsepower was still blamed for the car's failure to win.  James Weaver returned to the series for Rounds 12 & 13 at Brands Hatch, to replace Middlehurst for the rest of the season, but the luck didn't change. Nissan's rather ordinary season culminated in both cars retiring early from the final race of the season at Silverstone. The team eventually finished 4th overall in the manufacturers championship.

Three times champion Win Percy joined O'dor for the start of the 1993 season, along with Tiff Needell, who contested some of the later rounds in a '92 spec car.  The adoption of the two-litre rules for the Japanese touring car series in 1994 prompted the factory into doing something about the traditional bugbear of the Janspeed Primeras - a lack of power.  After a slow start to the season things began to improve and the results soon came. Kieth O'dor finally finished in the top five when he took fourth place at Oulton Park, and then second a few weeks later, in the first race of the double header at Brands Hatch. Another podium place (2nd) followed in the second race of the afternoon, with Percy finishing 4th. Kieth O'dor was fifth in the championship by the end of the days racing at the Kent circuit.  With the arrival of the new Nissan developed engine the Primera, and O'dor, took pole for the Grand Prix support race at Silverstone and then stormed to a 1st (O'dor) and 2nd (Percy) finish in front of the huge F1 crowd. The rest of the season saw the cars running, and finishing, well although no more wins followed. At the end of the season O'dor finally finished 6th in the drivers championship, rounding off a good year for the Nissan team.

Much was expected for 1994.  Nissan once again entrusted the running of the primeras to Janspeed and entered a three car team sporting a new red "Old Spice" sponsored livery. Odor was joined by, first, Belgian racer Eric Van de Poele and then Tiff Needell in the second car.  The season was rather lack lustre though, with the team only achieving middle order finishes.  As in '93 the Grand Prix support race at Silverstone was memorable for the Nissan team, albeit all for the wrong reasons this time. All three Primeras were involved in a huge multi car pile up at Copse corner just after the start resulting in them not making the grid for the race re-start. That accident alone reputedly cost the team £100,000 in repair bills!  Kieth O'dor was involved in two other "large shunts" during the season adding more woe to Nissan's year.  By the time the championship ended at Donington none of the drivers figured in the top ten points places and the team finished outside the top six in the manufacturers championship.  It was an unhappy year for Nissan with all the promise of 1993 forgotten by the end of '94.

After a season away from Britain, Nissan rejoined the BTCC with a 'semi-privateer' team from Andy Rouse Engineering (ARE) for the start of the 1996 season.  After the disappointment of '94, Nissan GB did not want to give the project full works status by forking out the hefty registration fee for the manufacturer's championship, but Rouse was receiving far more help than was allowed in the privateers' Total Cup competition.  Rouse was forced to accept old equipment for the opening rounds of the season.  The 1995 spec cars were entered in association with Nissan Motorsport Europe, to be driven by Gary Ayles, returning after several seasons in the Italian touring series, and Owen McAuley who had graduated from F3.  Gary Ayles finally inherited a '96 spec machine mid way through the season, but McAuley quit the team unhappy at being stuck in the '95 car.  Jamie Spence later made a one-off appearance in the car for the final rounds at Brands Hatch.  The season wasn't a huge success with both drivers only scoring 5 points between them in the championship!

Anthony Reid - 1997 Nissan Primera GT

The start of the 1997 season saw a complete change throughout team, with a full works package returning. The brand new Primera GT was drafted in along with two new drivers, David Leslie (ex Honda) and Anthony Reid who had returned to the UK after several seasons racing in Japan.  Ray Mallock Ltd (RML) was alongside Vodafone Nissan Racing to take over running of the team.  Although it was the last of the 1997 BTCC cars to appear, many of the parts had already been tested on interim '96 shelled cars, and the new Nissan was quick right from the off.  Leslie was fourth in round one and already on the podium in round three.  The season went well with the car achieving steady results, finally finishing fifth in both the manufacturers, and teams final tables.

Ray Mallock Ltd's second season with Vodafone Nissan Racing was all that it should have been and brought the 1998 manufacturers title, the team's title and four more wins than any other manufacturer managed. A total of nine outright race wins saw Reid take the chequered flag seven times, and Leslie winning twice.  If there was a down side to the end of the 1998 season it was that Anthony Reid was just beaten by Rydell (Volvo) for the driver's championship title.

If 1998 had been a good year for Nissan, then 1999 was superb. After a shaky start at Donington, in the opening meeting, Nissan swept all before them.  Responsibilities were again split between Ray Mallock Ltd and Nissan Motorsports Europe.  Laurent Aiello had been drafted in to replace Anthony Reid, the latter having moved to Ford at the end of 1998.  Aiello reigned supreme all season, taking a total of 10 race wins on his way to winning the coveted drivers title, at the first time of asking.  David Leslie also drove well, taking three wins, and was within reach of the championship for most of the season, finally finishing second.  Nissan won the 'grand slam' taking every award in the championship, the driver's, manufacturer's and team's titles.  To round off a perfect season Matt Neal also won the Michelin Cup for Independent's driving a....... Primera.  The works team had also assisted the Max Power - Team Dynamics independent outfit during the season.

Shortly after the close of the 1999 season Nissan announced that it would not be contesting the 2000 BTCC season as a works unit, although it still gave support to Max Power - Team Dynamics.
